Three world experts on crop disease discover a secret from the time of Alexander the Great and are brutally murdered. A centuries old conspiracy plots to destroy much of the world's food supply as part of a plan for world domination. The PROJECT team must stop a traitor and prevent a world-wide disaster. The hunt for answers leads Nick Carter and Selena Connor to Greece, Bulgaria and the United States. In a series of life and death confrontations they encounter unlikely allies, an ancient legacy of bio-warfare and a cover up with ominous implications for freedom. James Campbell is a world expert in crop viruses. He discovers nine clay tablets from ancient Persia containing a clue to the location of a golden urn marked with the curse of a Greek goddess, part of treasure seized by Alexander the Great during the fall of Babylon. Then he's horribly murdered, along with two of his colleagues. Campbell has been working on a secret bio-warfare program for the Pentagon. The murders get the attention of Elizabeth Harker, Director of a covert intelligence unit called the Project. Nick Carter is Harker's team leader. He struggles with old injuries and PTSD from his years as a combat Marine. Nick is deeply conflicted about his lover and teammate, Selena Connor. Selena's been with the Project for less than a year. She's having a hard time dealing with the mayhem that goes with her job and her feelings about Nick. Nick and Selena follow a bloody trail through Greece, Bulgaria and America, uncovering a heartless plan to destroy half the world's food supply, part of a strategy by a centuries-old conspiracy to achieve world domination. It will kill millions if it succeeds and time's running out-it's set to happen soon. Harker is forced to make an unheard of alliance to try and stop the plot and avoid possible war with Russia. All the while, a high-placed traitor does his best to sabotage the Project at every turn. The surprise ending foreshadows the next book in the series.

Obesity represents one of the major global health challenges of the twenty-first century. Its occurrence has now reached epidemic proportions, not only in industrialized nations, but increasingly in less developed countries too. Written by world-leading specialists in public health nutrition, Globesity cuts straight to the underlying nature and causes of this devastating trend. It shows that the causes of obesity are primarily socio-economic and the result of a distorted agricultural and food production and supply system. To address this problem, we must learn how to better manage the physical, social and economic environment rather than simply focusing on individual lifestyle choices. The authors draw startling parallels between the obesity crisis and climate change, both of which are characterized by the over-consumption of increasingly scarce resources and require radical, urgent and sustainable solutions. The authors argue that if we are to deal with the twin crises of our climate and our waistlines, action must be taken now. Drawing on a wide range of sources and disciplines, including anthropology, economics, sociology, epidemiology, medicine and nutrition, Globesity provides a vital treatment of the issues for general readers, health professionals, policy-makers and students alike.

Paul Easton is a Kent State draft dodger and opposed to the Viet Nam war, as many intellectuals were during the sixties. He takes refuge in Canada. While on his way to a teaching job in the interior of British Columbia, his train derails, so he takes a shortcut through the woods to the town of Castlegar. While resting beside a pond, a beautiful creature named Tanya, appears from nowhere - surfacing in the water. The two fall in love. Soon grim realities take over. Ideologically, these two lovers are miles apart. Tanya is a member of a religious cult known as the Sons of Freedom, who live on nearby communal farms. Then there is Gregor, a Freedomite boy, betrothed to Tanya, and jealous of Paul's interest in her. Yet he admires Paul's ideology. Paul takes up his teaching position in Castlegar. It's a small school close to where the Sons of Freedom are encamped. When Tanya finds out that Paul is a school teacher, her perception of him changes. The Freedomites have always taught their own children, and it's mainly religion. The relationship between Tanya and Paul disintegrates. Gregor's jealousy turns into rage. He beats up on Paul, and then gets into a nightclub brawl, finally ending up in jail, and disgracing himself before his elders. Tanya is ordered by the elders to marry Gregor. Later a split occurs within the Freedomite camp. Some decide to return to Russia, others, the zealots, remain. Tanya is one of them. Gregor and his friend Michael Kirov, foil a government plan to auction off vacated Freedomite homes by torching them just before they depart for Russia. The few remaining Freedomites take refuge in the hills, living in tents. Several months later, Tanya gives birth to a son, Vassya, but only Tanya and her sister Natasha know that the real father is Paul. Paul begins to realize he is dealing with fanatics - people who have lost touch with reality. Winter sets in. Conditions at the camp become intolerable. There are food shortages and a lack of medical supplies.

Despite the existence of many competitive analytical techniques, molecular absorption spectrophotometry still remains very popular in practice, particularly in biochemical, clinical, organic, agricultural, food and environmental analyses. This is due mainly to the inherent ease and relative simplicity of spectrophotometric procedures and the availability of reliable and highly-automated instruments. Moreover, the method and its instrumentation has recently undergone considerable development resulting in some new special approaches of spectrophotometry in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) regions. Although there are a number of comprehensive textbooks dealing with UV/VIS spectrophotometry, they tend to describe historical aspects or contain collections of detailed procedures for the determination of analytes and do not reflect sufficiently the present state of the method and stage of development reached. This book provides a concise survey of the actual state-of-the-art of UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Special attention has been paid to problems with the Bouguer-Lambert-Beer law, absorption spectra, present trends in instrumentation, errors in spectrophotometry, evaluation of analyte concentration and calibration, optimization procedures, multicomponent analysis, differential spectrophotometries, problem of blanks, derivative and dual-wavelength spectrophotometry, spectrophotometric titration, the strong relations between complex formation and spectrophotometry, spectrophotometric investigation of complex equilibria and stoichiometry or automation in spectrophotometry. The significance of spectrophotometry in connection with liquid-liquid extraction, reaction kinetics, trace analysis, environmental and clinical analysis is also covered. The text is supported by tables and figures, and numerous references are provided for each topic treated. The book is written for all those who USE UV/VIS spectrophotometry in the laboratory and will also be useful to students as su.

In my opinion, unless you're a total introvert, agoraphobic, disabled or too lazy to leave the house, your best bet to buy most things you need is locally. Go to the Yellow Pages, read your local newspapers, drive around the shopping areas, go to local free ad websites and talk to people you know about what you need. I generally buy most of my stuff from the big department stores but if I need something like furniture, I'll check out the furniture stores on the poor side of the town because the prices for the same goods are often much cheaper than a store in the higher class part of town plus you can often haggle with the owner on a cash deal. By shopping on the poor side of town at supermarkets for food, you can often save several dollars on a load of groceries. Beyond that, I generally go to the thrift stores a few times a year to buy t-shirts, clothes and anything else that strikes my fancy as I look around.

Modern methods of agriculture have led to cities growing out of control and reducing the available agricultural land, threatening the sustainability of our food system. The previous mutually sustaining relationships of animals, humans and the land have been lost with the progress of industry. The Smartcity - an ecological symbiosis between nature, society and the built form - is the innovative response to contemporary problems from one of the world's leading urban design and architectural thinkers. Addressing the problems of unchecked city growth, the idea of the Smartcity questions whether we could begin to live once again from first principles, focusing in on the inhabitants of the city. The holistic construct of the Smartcity is developed through a series of international case studies, some commissioned by government organisations, others speculative and polemic. Reframing the way people think about urban green space and the evolution of cities, CJ Lim and Ed Liu explore how the reintegration of agriculture in urban environments can cultivate new spatial practices and social cohesion in addition to food for our tables. Representing an emerging architectural voice in matters of environmental and social sustainability, Smartcities and Eco-warriors is a long overdue treatment of the subject from a designer's perspective, and is essential reading for practitioners and students in the fields of architecture, urban planning, environmental engineering, landscape design, agriculture and sociology. An inspiration to government agencies and NGOs dealing with climate change, it also resonates with anyone concerned about cities, energy conservation and the future of food

In this book, I describe the types of cases and the problems that typically confront a family practice physician, and I discuss the many unusual experiences and challenges in dealing with my patients during my 30 year tenure. I explain the extreme importance of the physician's role, especially in a rural community, and I reveal some of my innermost secrets and confessions that I held for many years, regardless of how gross or gruesome they may seem. My book presents a highly-opinionated version with substantive documentation as to how and why our medical system is in dire need of revamping. And I inform the general public of the tremendous waste and ineffectiveness of our government when it comes to medication and controls. I explain as to why insurance coverage such as Obamacare is truly needed, along with detailing my general dissatisfaction and conflicts with the Food and Drug Administration and various other governmental agencies. In my second book, I continue with a witty and colorful satire in my customary erratic pattern, while exploiting the many improprieties and disparities that exist in our health care system today, including insurance irregularities and treatment discrimination, along with detailing the diagnostic injustices that doctors tend to practice.

The flag of France is one of the six flags that have flown over Texas, but all that many people know about the French presence in Texas is the ill-fated explorer Cavelier de La Salle, fabled pirate Jean Laffite, or Cajun music and food. Yet the French have made lasting contributions to Texas history and culture that deserve to be widely known and appreciated. In this book, François Lagarde and thirteen other experts present original articles that explore the French presence and influence on Texas history, arts, education, religion, and business from the arrival of La Salle in 1685 to 2002.Each article covers an important figure or event in the France-Texas story. The historical articles thoroughly investigate early French colonists and explorers, the French pirates and privateers, the Bonapartists of Champ-d'Asile, the French at the Alamo, Dubois de Saligny and French recognition of the Republic of Texas, the nineteenth-century utopists of Icaria and Reunion, and the French Catholic missions. Other articles deal with French immigration in Texas, including the founding of Castroville, Cajuns in Texas, and the French economic presence in Texas today (the first such study ever published). The remaining articles look at painters Théodore and Marie Gentilz, sculptor Raoul Josset, French architecture in Texas, French travelers from Théodore Pavie to Simone de Beauvoir who have written on Texas, and the French heritage in Texas education. More than seventy color and black-and-white illustrations complement the text.

This book discusses some of the most potent threats to human security in Africa. It deals especially with those threats to the security of African people which are least understood or explored. In themes varying from the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, multidimensional consequences of the using of girls as soldiers in wars, food security, the devastation of internal displacement in Africa, the policy conundrums of HIV/AIDS, the link between natural resources and human security, to the problems of forced labour, threats to women's security, and environmental security, the book examines the legal and policy challenges of protecting human security in Africa. This work also analyses the role of NGOs and the civil society in advocating human security issues in Africa. It considers the role of regional human rights mechanisms and judicial bodies, such as the African Commission for Human Rights and the African Court of Human and Peoples' Rights, in seeking to guarantee human security in Africa. Finally, with particular reference to the Somalia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Darfur crises, the book studies the role of African regional organizations, especially the African Union, in protecting the human security of Africans. Written by leading experts on its various themes, this is an indispensable book for all those seeking to learn more about the real challenges facing Africans and African organizations.

ABOUT THE BOOK Almost everybody dreams of saving time and money, two of the most precious resources in the modern world. When you become a mother, saving time and money becomes even more important, but it also becomes a little more challenging. Whether you are a fulltime homemaker, a self-employed professionalr who works from home, or a working mother who holds an outside job, making sure your family has three nutritious meals a day (plus snacks and other extras) can take up a surprising amount of money and energy. According to Gary Foreman of The Dollar Stretcher, many families spend up to 20 percent of their total income on food purchases alone. This figure can shift depending on different factors, but if it sounds high to you, then you can definitely benefit from taking greater control of your shopping trips and seeing the figures you really want. Before you had kids, a trip to the supermarket probably involved a quick spin around the store to grab healthy essentials and a few indulgences, based only on your tastes or those of your partner. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK It's the digital age, and you can take advantage of modern conveniences even during basic tasks such as stocking up on groceries for your hungry family. Check out trusted online vendors such Amazon.com or the websites of well-known retailers to see if you can snag a better deal online than when shopping in person. Finding a good deal online cuts down on the process of driving to the store, locating your item, comparing it with other items available, waiting in line at the cash register, and so on. When you are shopping online, you can accomplish everything you need to do during a few quiet minutes between dinner and bedtime, or before the kids arrive home from school. After you compare deals and place your order, you just have to wait for your purchases to show up on your doorstep. The key here is to time your online purchases so that you do not have a gap between the time you need your purchase an

We think we understand environmental damage: pollution, water scarcity, a warming world. But these problems are just the tip of the iceberg. Food insecurity, financial assets drained of value by environmental damage, and a rapid rise in diseases of animal originare among the underreported consequences of an unsustainable global system. In State of the World 2015, the flagship publication of The Worldwatch Institute, experts explore hidden threats to sustainability and howto address them. How will nations deal with migration as climate change refugees cross borders in order to escape flooding, drought, or other extreme weather events? What will happen to the price and availability offossil energy-the foundation of industrial civilization-as these resources oscillate between surplus and scarcity? If perpetual economic growth on a finite planet is impossible, what are the alternatives? Can national governments manage the transition Eight key issues are addressed in depth, along with the central question ofhow we can develop resilience to these and other shocks. For decades, The Worldwatch Institute has been a leader in identifying and analyzing emerging environmental threats. With the latest edition of State of The World, the authorities at Worldwatch bring to light challenges we can no longer afford to ignore.

Antibiotics and Antibiosis in Agriculture: With Special Reference to Synergism is a collection of papers dealing with the properties of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, as well as the synergistic combinations of these and other antibacterial substances. One paper discusses issues regarding antibiotics such as the sufficiency of supply, the need for more and new antibiotics, and the period of obsolescence of antibiotics. Another paper explains the use of pairs of agents as synergic combinations, for example, novobiocin and tetracycline combined together as albamacyn T. Synergy types in chemotherapy includes those used in antibacterial, penetration, and internal synergies; the paper also notes that possible complications can arise from antibiotic interactions of drug synergies. Some papers discuss applications of antibiotics, antibiosis, stress effects, and food microbiology. These applications include the use of nisin, an antibiotic, as an aid in heat preservation of food. The use of starvation as a stress mechanism in a culture of Enterobacter aerogenes to accelerate exhaustion of glycerol, which the microorganisms need, lead to glycerol-deficiency related deaths. Other papers discuss the relationships of antibiotics and antibiosis to animals and animal feeds. This collection will benefit pharmacologists, bio-chemists, agriculturists, chemotherapists, veterinarians, and medical practitioners.
